We wear many brands, eat at fast food restaurants, go shopping, and watch TV. Every step of your life in modern society is influenced by advertisement. You come across billboards at the train station, on your way to the gym, or at the University. You will even see advertising when you use a public toilet! Advertisement is a form of communication. If we are walking around, and see commercial advertisement, it means that companies are trying to persuade us to buy their products. Their only goal is to generate increased consumption of their products and services. In 2010 $467 billion was spending worldwide on advertising ($142.5 billion of which was spent in the United States). In a historical sense, advertising went through domestic, export, international, and multi-national levels. Now it has become global, which means that ideas can also be imported and exported.

How are people affected by advertising nowadays? Can a human being become an advertisement themselves?

Advertisement might be necessary for economic growth, but there are also social costs, like the invasion of public spaces, such as schools, leading to the exploitation of children. Advertising uses psychological pressure, and it can therefore manipulate a consumer’s needs and wants. We buy what we don’t really want or need. Generally, outdoor advertising blights public spaces in our cities, and increased consumption causes environmental pollution. Advertising is expensive, and the media is dependent on advertising to survive; which in turn can lead to censorship. Generally, each commercial advertisement can be viewed as an invasion of privacy.
